UDT/IPAM Integration

Hi,

We recently added UDT to our Orion implementation.  I've discovered that in IPAM, some subnets have the UDT Switch information populated, others do not.  When I add switches to UDT, do I also need to include L3 devices in order to get that information?  Right now, we are using UDT to monitor the switches that our servers attach to.  This way our NOC can use UDT to locate where a specifc server is plugged in.I am looking for a confirmation that we need to include the L3 devices in order for UDT to work properly.

Thanks.

UDT and 3750 Switches

Hi,

just wondering if anyone else has had trouble getting switch port info from Cisco 3750s using UDT. I can get switch port info from all other Cisco models except for the 3750s.

Any suggestions/experience

Thanks.

SNMP Queue Failures

Ok, I posted orginally in the NPM forum (Re: SNMP Events).  Since I recently installed UDT as well, we thought it best I posted here.

We have recnetly started getting a lot of %SNMP-3-INPUT_QFULL_ERR: Packet dropped due to input queue full" errors on my big Catalyst switches. This starting happeing around the same time we installed UDT - and is still happening, btw.

I opened a support case with both Cisco and Solarwinds, and have not had much luck in determining if UDT or another Orion product is causing this. Cisco suggested I increase the queue-length on the switch (I did this 2x - first to 100, then to 250 - no change) then requested the MIBs being used by Orion, so i sent that over yetserday.  Solarwinds support, provided the mibs, and I am still looking at increasing the buffers more, but I am not sure what other impact this might have.

It just seems odd - has ANYONE see anything like this before?  My syslogs have doubled in size since this issue started, and is becomming quite worrysome for me.

Thanks.

Polling failed on Domain controller

I've just installed UDT 3.2 into my existing Orion system.  I am running NPM 11.0.1, SAM 6.1.1, NTA 3.11.  I have added my 10 Domain Controllers in UDT, but 3 of them come back with the following status, "Polling Failed, check security log access credentials"   The domain controllers are 2008R2, 2012 and 2003.  The account I am using is a member of the Domain Admins group.  I've checked every permission I can think of on the logs, but the account has all needed permissions.  I've been able to remotely access the logs with the account.  I'm not sure what else to check as I can't find any other errors.  When I tested UDT 3.1, I did not have this issue.  I am using the same account as my test.  Thanks for any pointers.

Hi There,

We recently installed UDT v3.2.0 and applied hotfix 1. When I add nodes to UDT, I cannot view them in NPM to get normal stats - error message appears on the website, however, the nodes that are not added to UDT display normal

Anyone had similar issues?

Would really appreciate the help/advice!

Any way to add UDT ports to an existing switch node in NPM without having to delete & re-add the node?

We have a bunch of switches added in NPM and whomever added them previously did not scan for UDT ports when adding the nodes.  Now, I'd like to have those switches scanning with UDT ports and I can't seem to find a way to additionally add that on the existing node.  The only way I've seemed to find was to delete the node, re-add it, and then click "scan for UDT" while finalizing the addition of the node.  Is this this only way, or am I simply missing something?

How does VRF polling work in UDT?

We're trying to get L3 information from a Cisco Nexus 9508 with two VRFs but UDT doesn't seem to be getting the ARP entries. Everything we've read says that each VRF needs to be mapped to a context and then that context should be mapped back to a community. Is that necessary? I don't see anything in the documentation.

Node Location property

Is it possible to assign the group name to the node's location property automatically? This would be very useful when performing node searches based on its location as I have each group being a specific location that automatically assigns nodes based on the subnet they belong to.

UDT not seeing port details for Nexus 5k Switches

Not sure if anyone can help with this, but I added my Cisco Nexus 5k switches to UDT but I am not seeing any port details for any of the ports. I see all ports, but device data for each port is not showing up.

removing old user data

I've got several years of user data I want to get rid of. Is it safe to delete (old) records from the User  (UDT_User, UDT_UserToIPAddressCurrent, UDT_UserToIPAddressHistory) tables?

Is there a way to only add ports that are used? And can I schedule a search used ports that aren't currently monitored?

Over 50% of our total ports are free and mostly for expansion at sites.  Since many of these ports aren't used and have nothing connected, I don't want them counting against our total ports for licensing.  How can I add just the used ports?  UDT seems to want to add all the ports for a node.  Also, how do I setup a job to search for used ports that aren't currently monitored and monitor them automatically?

How to see devices connected to a switch?

Hello SolarWinds community,

Is there a way to tell what is connected to a switch using UDT? I remember there used to be port history, but I am not sure what changed because this information is no longer available. Is this a default setting for UDT? To identify and catalogue what is connected to a port on a switch? If so, what settings can I check to enable this feature again?

ARP from Devices that don't allow SNMP Polling

Long time reader, first time poster.

In an attempt to create a single pain of glass within UDT,  I am running into a problem with our router/firewall. There is no option to poll the ARP table via SNMP. I have access to the database and have looked at several tables and was wondering if anyone has used the SDK or created a homebrew solution to push IP/MAC into the UDT_EndpointIP table and if so does anyone know if the UDT_IPAddressCurrent/History tables need to be updated as well or is that information updated from within the already existing framework of the UDT product?

I'm ready to back things up and start testing but was hoping that someone has already invented the wheel and that I could stand on their shoulders.

The other option I've looked at is to take a spare device and manually populate the ARP table using Perl and API calls to the router to get the current data.

Thanks,

Rosie

P.S. If I should post this elsewhere please let me know.

UDT not working on Nexus FEX units

I've run into an issue with UDT polling Nexus FEX ports.  Basic background - the majority of my network over the last few years has migrated from Cat6500s to Nexus 7018s, with FEX 2248s.  I've had users come to me and tell me they aren't seeing MACs and IPs for devices on the Nexus switches.  I started doing some exploring and also opened a case with SW support (822548) and here's what I've found -

Using the UDT compatibility checker on a Nexus, I'm noticing the vmMembershipSummaryTable is not being populated by the switch for layer 2 access ports on the FEX.  It does populate if there is a line card port assigned to a vlan on the Nexus. For example, switch Nexus1 has a 10/100/1000 Ethernet Module in slot 1, and on port 48 its in vlan 10, the vmMembershipSummaryTable populates for vlan 10.  However, if vlan 10 ports are ONLY on the FEX unit, i.e. Ethernet101/1/48 is a switch port assigned to vlan10, it will not populate the vmMembershipSummaryTable.  The problem with my network of Nexus is I don't have many line cards with layer 2 access ports, most are 10 gig modules with trunks connected to multiple FEX units which have all the layer 2 ports.

I've opened a case with Cisco on this after my case with solar winds, and Cisco says basically nothing is broken.  The port ifindex for the FEX ports is greater than 2048, which prevents the vmMembershipSummaryTable from populating.  Because this table isn't populating, SW doesn't know which vlans to go in and grab the dot1dBasePortTable@vlanXXX - thus applying the mac address to the switch port.

Just curious if anyone else has run into this issue and if so if there was any work around to get Nexus FEX units reporting mac/ip in UDT.

UDT - Multiple MAC addresses per port, limited by XXX

$

I modified the default UDT Connected MAC and IP Addresses report to only pull ports that have more than one MAC address connected.

 SELECT Nodes.Caption,
 UDT_ConnectedMACsAndIPs.PortNumber AS PortNumber,
 UDT_ConnectedMACsAndIPs.PortName AS PortName,
 UDT_ConnectedMACsAndIPs.ConnectedMACs AS ConnectedMACs,
 UDT_ConnectedMACsAndIPs.ConnectedIPs AS ConnectedIPs,
 UDT_ConnectedMACsAndIPs.PortID AS PortID
 FROM UDT_ConnectedMACsAndIPs
 INNER JOIN Nodes
 ON (UDT_ConnectedMACsAndIPs.NodeID = Nodes.NodeID)
 WHERE ConnectedMACs > 1

I would like to limit these results to non-infrastructure ports, i.e. user access ports that have no business hosting multiple MAC addresses. I'm curious if anyone with more intimate knowledge of UDT's database might know of a property that I could use to limit the search.

I've considered a limit by interface description, but that would require us to trust descriptions and keep them accurate. I'm willing to do that, but I was trying to come up with a way that was a little more concrete, as we've had issues with folks who "forget" to update descriptions in the past.

I thought that if I could somehow identify a CDP relationship within UDT, I could have the report ignore any ports that have a CDP neighbor. This would require us to police CDP on user ports, but that is good practice regardless and should be implemented.

We eventually plan to move to VoIP, which will introduce new complications with the report. We'll likely just limit it to more than two MACs and call it good. I don't believe they will ever be Cisco IP phones, so the CDP possibility there doesn't worry me. Any IP phones on the network would probably use LLDP.

Thoughts?

How to search for VLANs by Switchport Interface?

$

Perhaps I am missing something obvious which is a distinct possibility.    So can someone direct me on how to find switchport interfaces and their configured, associated VLAN (id or name) using SolarWinds?

The ideal output would look something like the following but more is always better.

Hostname         Interface Name          VLAN ID     VLAN Name

switchname1     GigabitEthernet1/0/49     101          vlanname101

I have NPM, NCM, UDT (where I would expect to find it), and IPAM modules installed.

Versions are:  Orion Core 2012.2.1, IPAM 3.1.1, NCM 7.1.1, NPM 10.4.1, NTA 3.10.0, UDT 2.5.1

UDT -  Is there a way to search by VLAN?

Here is a SQL Query I found on Thwack posted by sean.martinez (thanks Sean if you happen to read this!) that works but is not something I can share with the team when they need to locate VLANs on a switchport.

"SELECT IPAddress, HostName, MACAddress, ConnectedTo, PortNumber, PortName, VLAN, NodeStatus, NodeID, PortID, ConnectionType, FirstSeen, ConnectionTypeName  FROM UDT_AllEndPoints"

NCM - A report called Cisco VLANs is worthless.

We run MST (Multiple Spanning Tree) so all VLANs show up on each switch even when they have no interfaces assigned to a specific VLAN.  Also, the report includes VLANid 1002, 1003, 1004, and 1005 which means the report isn't very polished.

IPAM - Ehh, only if I manually entered all of the VLAN ID stuff would it help.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,

Clint

We have a substantial amount of properties segmented off by cisco asa and UDT can't pull ARP information like it can on a switch/router. Is there any plan to better poll ASA?
