How to see devices connected to a switch?

Hello SolarWinds community,

Is there a way to tell what is connected to a switch using UDT? I remember there used to be port history, but I am not sure what changed because this information is no longer available. Is this a default setting for UDT? To identify and catalogue what is connected to a port on a switch? If so, what settings can I check to enable this feature again?

Cannot Add Nodes to UDT

I recently added UDT to my Orion server.  It has been running NPM, NCM, IPAM, NTA and SAM.

The install seemed to go fine and all services are running as far as I can tell.  But, I can't get any of my nodes to be monitored by UDT.

From the "Port Management" screen, Using Show: Nodes and Filter to: UDT Unmonitored Nodes,

I select a Cisco switch and click the "Monitor Node with UDT" link. But, it does not function. It seems to do nothing.

All modules are the most current versions.

Any ideas?

Auto-Whitelist monitored devices

Maybe I am missing it, but I have searched quite a bit and I am unable to find a solution. I have many devices in my network and many more that UDT considers rogue when I disable the 3 "Any" rules. Even disabling only the Any MAC rule is leaving me with a lot of devices in the rogue list. Is there any way for UDT to automatically whitelist the devices that I am currently monitoring in NPM?

UDT not seeing port details for Nexus 5k Switches

Not sure if anyone can help with this, but I added my Cisco Nexus 5k switches to UDT but I am not seeing any port details for any of the ports. I see all ports, but device data for each port is not showing up.

Juniper UDT monitoring hits License doubly bad!

Our environment is made up almost entirely of Juniper hardware.

I noticed that when I added my entire production environment into UDT that Juniper with its config of physical and logical interface that UDT counts both as individually monitored ports.  For Cisco and other vendors we use I get both Layer2 and Layer3 info on the port monitored.

What this means is if I want to monitor one port on Cisco it costs 1 UDT license..if I want to monitor 1 port on Juniper it costs 2.

This caused me to burn through all my licensing and need to know if this will be addressed in a later release to treat Juniper logical/physical as one license or should I reach out to get some additional licensing for free from my account rep?

Hello,

I am not able to query for IP ARP from Cisco Nexus 7000. We have 2 of them.

Therefore, Search Device Tracker by IP Address no longer work.

When I go into UDT Job Status, I can see that UDT sees my switches as Layer 3 and Layer 2

We are using:

UDT version 2.0

Nexus 7010, version 6.1

2 VRF

The command to get the IP ARP is : "show ip arp vrf all"

Please advise.

This file sits on the temp dir of the local Solarwinds server and grows over 6 GB. How can I stop this or decrease it's cap size?

How to get connected device hostnames from Access Point?

I'm trying to find correct SQL query to find "connected" devices from Access Point.

Currently I can find devices with switch names with current query.

Select p2e.endpointid, e.MACAddress, ipc.IPAddress, dns.DNSName, P.Name, P.PortDescription, P2E.VlanID, N.Caption, ConnectionType, e.LastUpdate From Orion.UDT.PortToEndpointCurrent p2e left outer join Orion.UDT.Endpoint e on e.EndpointID= p2e.endpointid left outer join Orion.UDT.IPAddressCurrent ipc on p2e.EndpointId = ipc.EndpointID left outer join Orion.UDT.DNSNameCurrent dns on ipc.ipaddressID = dns.IPAddressID left outer join Orion.UDT.port P on P.PortID = p2e.PortID left outer join Orion.Nodes n on p.Nodeid = n.Nodeid where p2e.ConnectionType=1 and dns.DNSName is not null

I haven't found way to find tables which contains information about devices which are using access point.

Is there such information available?

Any way to add UDT ports to an existing switch node in NPM without having to delete & re-add the node?

We have a bunch of switches added in NPM and whomever added them previously did not scan for UDT ports when adding the nodes.  Now, I'd like to have those switches scanning with UDT ports and I can't seem to find a way to additionally add that on the existing node.  The only way I've seemed to find was to delete the node, re-add it, and then click "scan for UDT" while finalizing the addition of the node.  Is this this only way, or am I simply missing something?

Is it possible to assign the group name to the node's location property automatically? This would be very useful when performing node searches based on its location as I have each group being a specific location that automatically assigns nodes based on the subnet they belong to.

UDT Unused Ports report not giving accurate information

Please let me know if I am doing something wrong.

My network that I inherited has a major problem with "dead cabling".  Tracking switch port usage over time, is the #1 reason that we will be purchasing this software.  After running the unused port report, I found that I can free up 5 - 48 port switches and 4 - 24 port switches.  Total savings ~ 30k-45k dollars that would have been spent on future expansion.

After a week of monitoring (I know, I should have waited longer), I found that one room that had a 48 port and a 24 port only used 17 ports total.  This room was a computer lab 3 years ago but the cabling was never pulled back to the patch panel.  The ports were cut off and the cat5e was coiled in the ceiling.  These switches also provided connections to several currently occupied offices.  The 48 port switch showed in the report to only be using 2 ports.  I transfered those two ports up to the 24 port switch and removed the 48 port switch.  The next day I got the call about several problems with the network in that area.  I traced the inactive wall ports and connected 2 more.  I assumed that I just made a mistake somehow.

Today, I went to a different closet and prepared to reclaim a 48 and 24 port switch.  Armed with a fresh copy of the unused port report, I started disconnecting the "Never" ports.  On the third switch, I noticed activity lights on Ports 45 and 48.  Both of which were "Never".  Tracing these back to the patch panel, I recognized that these were drops that we just put into a classroom last fall.  Students have been using these computers all week according to the instructor.

Basically it boils dow to this:

UDT->Device Tracker Summary->192.168.0.13 shows ports 45 & 48 to be active, while the Orion Report Writer - UDT Unused Ports shows them to have never been used in the last 9 days.

I have run this report without any changes to the sql statement and have gotten the same data as when I have filtered it for a single switch.

SELECT

Nodes.Caption AS Caption, UDT_UnUsedPorts.Name AS Name, UDT_UnUsedPorts.DaysUnused AS DaysUnused

FROM

Nodes INNER JOIN UDT_UnUsedPorts ON (Nodes.NodeID = UDT_UnUsedPorts.NodeID)

WHERE

(

  (UDT_UnUsedPorts.DaysUnused = 'Never') AND

  (UDT_UnUsedPorts.IP_Address = '192.168.0.13')

Yields:

UDT1.JPG

Under Node Details for 0.13 on UDT it shows the following:

udt2.JPG

Any Ideas?

Thanks,

Terry

UDT not working on Nexus FEX units

$

I've run into an issue with UDT polling Nexus FEX ports.  Basic background - the majority of my network over the last few years has migrated from Cat6500s to Nexus 7018s, with FEX 2248s.  I've had users come to me and tell me they aren't seeing MACs and IPs for devices on the Nexus switches.  I started doing some exploring and also opened a case with SW support (822548) and here's what I've found -

Using the UDT compatibility checker on a Nexus, I'm noticing the vmMembershipSummaryTable is not being populated by the switch for layer 2 access ports on the FEX.  It does populate if there is a line card port assigned to a vlan on the Nexus. For example, switch Nexus1 has a 10/100/1000 Ethernet Module in slot 1, and on port 48 its in vlan 10, the vmMembershipSummaryTable populates for vlan 10.  However, if vlan 10 ports are ONLY on the FEX unit, i.e. Ethernet101/1/48 is a switch port assigned to vlan10, it will not populate the vmMembershipSummaryTable.  The problem with my network of Nexus is I don't have many line cards with layer 2 access ports, most are 10 gig modules with trunks connected to multiple FEX units which have all the layer 2 ports.

I've opened a case with Cisco on this after my case with solar winds, and Cisco says basically nothing is broken.  The port ifindex for the FEX ports is greater than 2048, which prevents the vmMembershipSummaryTable from populating.  Because this table isn't populating, SW doesn't know which vlans to go in and grab the dot1dBasePortTable@vlanXXX - thus applying the mac address to the switch port.

Just curious if anyone else has run into this issue and if so if there was any work around to get Nexus FEX units reporting mac/ip in UDT.
